Borobudur - Dieng
- Getting from Borobudur to Dieng by public transport is a long trip. You could try to hitch with a tour group combining Borobudur and Dieng in 1 day if you catch them at the parking lot, but they leave at 8.30 am. - By public transport, first take a bus to Magelang, then on to Wonosobo and then further to Dieng. In Wonosobo, you'll have to change busstations. You could do it by foot, but the road is pretty steep, or you could hire a horsecarriage. - You can also do a tour Borobudur-Dieng in 1 day, either by tour, either by hiring your own taxi or minibus. This should cost you about 200.000 Rp for the day (9/98).
Staying in Wonosobo
If you don't want to stay in a basic place at Dieng, you should stay in Wonosobo.
Duta Travellers Homestay at Jalan Rsu, 3 (tel (0286) 21674) is at walking distance from the busstation and charges 15.000 Rp for a double with breakfast and shower (6/98). Staff is friendly and rooms are clean.
Staying in Dieng
Don't expect any luxury in Dieng. Comparing to Yogya this is hell both for accomodation and food. There's nothing to do in the evening except talking to the few other travellers and going to sleep early. It's very cold at night, this is one of the few places where we used our sleeping bags.
We stayed at the Dieng Plateau Homestay, a dirty hotel for 10.000 Rp (5/97).
What to do?
- We rented a bike from the guys in front of the hotel. They charge a steep 20.000 for 4 hours. With a motorbike you can easily see everything in less then a day. - It's important in Dieng to start early, since after 10 am it can get very cloudy. - We saw all the classical things like the temples, 2 sulphur lakes, the multicolored lake, the deep well. The multicolored lake is quite nice.
Is it worth the long trip? I would say no, but that's a personal opinion. If you go, make sure you get there very early before the clouds come rolling in.
